im sorry to put this here as as its not photography related at all and only really applies to the uk, but i feel very strongly about the potential of an idiot running our country for another 4 yrs.

So strongly infact i was motivated to write this blog highlighting some of the reasons why this man and his party no longer deserve to be in power, its a rant so beware. [link]

I don't know if I ever told you this, but my background is actually economics. That's what I studied in Uni. Did well in it too. That's before I did the hippy thing to go and live in Greece, earn peanuts and get a suntan. Then I did some more studies (EFL and Linguistics) and ended up at the British Council.

I work a lot with economists and consultants here, and regularly try to introduce them to this stuff, and the vast majority just don't get it. That's fair enough, I didn't get it till I was in my 30s, and when you've just graduated (as most of the people I work with have) you are completely indoctrinated by the system, and I regularly have students getting really agitated with me because they truly believe that the world can be made a better place through economics, that loans are the answers to all the worlds problems. When I bring up stuff like the doubling of the difference between the worlds richest and worlds poorest in the last 30 years, the increasing difference between the rich and the poor in each developed country, the fact that more developed countries have higher crime rates, higher numbers of people in prison, higher rates of depression, higher rates of suicide, they just don't see that it's connected. There really is an attitude that crime just comes from people being stupid and lazy, and that we just need tougher laws and jail sentences to deal with it. Build walled communities, put the criminals in prison etc etc. Loan more money to the 3rd world, if they have a better economy, then they'll be happier....except that has never been the case.
It never ceases to amaze me that we've all been suckered into judging our countries success by it's economic status, our personal happiness by our income. I've even asked students to provide me with the formula. "So, I live in a house that's 70m squared and my happiness level is X. If I live in a house that's 200m squared, how much will my happiness increase?" and of course, people look think I'm joking...but at the same time they're buying into that belief.

But every year, there are always a couple of students who turn up with a John Pilger or Noam Chomsky book on their desk, who you can see that something is opening up inside them. That's all you can do really, try and plant a seed.

yeah i voted once also, poll tax wow the luxury of only having to worry about paying one extra tax, i bet maggie thatcher is gutted she couldnt think up as many ways to tax us as we have now....

you are right you should not vote here, how dare you abandon ship and leave us all to it in your sunny climes and then have an opinion!! ;)

as i said to earthart capitalism is flawed as flawed as communisum, china and asia are about to show us exactly how flawed capitalism is by pushing it to its inevitable end, a world ravaged of all its natural; resources, we are locust...

too much thought is given over to the past(other than learning) present is whats important and who is best placed to make that a better place.

we are not left with a lot of choice which is why so many are completely uninterested in voting, political reform(worldwide)is needed really....

i doubt its just portuguese politics andy it seems its politics worldwide, how do so many country end up with idiots running them!!

So I can't decide whether it's an exciting election result or a complete anti-climax. We all expected Brown to get trashed, so now surprise there, which means that the happiest outcome for me is that plastic Cam, who really believed that there was nothing that could stop his sweep to number 10, has to realise that he's almost as unpopular as one-eyed Gordon. It's funny seeing Cameron claiming that the public have voted against Labour governing, but failing to mention that they've also shown they don't want the Tories much either. I saw a commentator this morning saying that it's pretty much a rejection of the way politics is done right now....not an apathetic "whatever", but a high turnout of people saying that they don't want any of this lot.

I've got a sneaking feeling Brown is going to cling on, try to put together a deal with the Scottish and N.Ireland parties, get himself close to the 326 and then dare Nick Clegg to not work with Labour.

Wonderful, eh?

One things for sure. The UK is going to have to get used to dealing with hung parliaments, because it's going to become more and more common. In Portugal, it's been quite a while since any party had an abolute majority...there's a coalition government in place right now. I believe Israel and Canada have something similar too.

id hope andy this point will be looked upon as the turning point as far as reforming politics goes in this country.more people turned out to vote than expected(infact many were turned away because polling stations couldnt cope with the 54% population that voted which is scandalous for a start)they mainly turned out to vote to show their dissatisfaction with gordon brown and labour(mainly because of the way he was not voted in by anyone!!) but neither was there a resounding win for the conservatives which shows how unnerved everyone was by potentially having them in power there being not a lot of difference between them and the conservatives now, more votes for the liberals than ever before which did not transform into seats....we are left with a bizarre situation.
If brown tires to cling on im quite convinced the people will go to no10 and drag him out the arrogant fool!!

i still insist the people that govern us should be there on individual merit in their chosen profession, politicians recently have proved themself to have little idea about the real world, ignoring the public uproar about expenses and actually having the gaul to claim legal expenses for their court costs!! The more i hear them talk the more i realise a politicians life (especially career politicians)happens in a bubble of misguided beleifs and assumations. christ gordon brown was a bloody reporter what suddenly makes him qualified to run the finances of the country and then become prime minister, its a farce and more and more of the population are realising that....
coalitions can work if the most suitable get their free reign, but as long as we have this daft allegiance to political parties that will not happen.....sad times really....we shall see what happens....

I may have mentioned it before, but have you ever seen the Venus Project. It's basically the brainchild of one guy, who seems to be amazing. He basically says that the running of the world should be done by technicians, not by politicians, who actually don't really understand the planet or technology, and can only manage through legislation...which ultimately doesn't work. There's a fantastic lecture on it here [link] and more information on the Venus Project here [link] and here [link]
I know the Venus Project is really out there, but it seems to me to be the only real way to go. Such a shame that because of the monetary system, it will never actually happen

Hear hear! I think there will be quite a lot of "anti-votes" tomorrow, for the reasons you outline.. also from a purely photographic point of view, Labour have said they're going to reinstate the bits of Clause 43 which were taken out of the DEB affecting photographers and orphan works/copyright...
