well i said a long journal would follow but im afraid i lied.

D.A has served me well i recognise that, and how it has helped me develop as a photographer. But as many photographers i know here i think a natural evolution to 500px will take place. This site contains more of the photography i aspire to.

im afraid i do not aspire to 'photography' like this;

or this;

or this;

if the moderators that are judging photography are giving daily deviation to obvious manipulation then im outta here, it may just be people wrongly catergorising their photos so who am i to judge.

Sure i will keep my profile here and post a few but my efforts are better spent elsewhere.

Thank you all for your support over the years i truly appreciate how you all have made my photography develop.

best wishes

steve

Well out of the 14 images that i submitted to the 'landscape Photographer Of the year Competition' this shot was shortlisted

which i didnt expect at all, thanks must go to marcin [link] for suggesting it as i dont think i would have submitted it.
To me it seems they have chosen much more 'edgy' images this year, but to be honest i couldnt give a fig about a competition like this it means nothing. Sure its good for exposure if you do well but its all so subjective. The shot they chose was only taken because i'd driven (in all)130 miles to get there and back only to find the light was terrible and so thought i had to take away a shot to make it worthwhile. dont get me wrong i like the shot the contrasts are nice and the sea colour is wonderful but i felt i submitted better.....which illustrates the points its all very subjective.
Well done to Andy mumford(an imposter from portugal who came here for 5 days and managed to get a shot through to the next round....i heard he'd laced the palm of one of the judges...now he's a pro wedding photograher an all he can afford to do such things!)alex nail...for a fantastic shot that stands a great chance of winning and guy richardson who has two shots through...good luck to you all.....
And thank you to all who participated in suggesting featuring faving and commenting on my latest DD which totally caught me by surprise....this was a shot i nearly didnt submit....it came at quite a low point for me so was gratefully received...thank you....

ok i'd appreciate some input from anyone as to what they think i should enter into 'Landscape Photographer of the year' one of the most prestigous landscape photography competitions in the uk [link]....

Unlike many others im not going to pick a shortlist, i'd just ask that you suggest three (if possible) enteries from my gallery. They should be images from the UK and obviously landscapes!!...and dont go too far back in my gallery !!

Those that take the time will have the chance to win a year's subscription, i will choose the winner randomly from those that suggest three shots, many thanks in advance.

As for news i recently photographed a friends wedding in Lithuania, wow was that hard work, i have upmost admiration for anyone brave enough to do this type of photography, it is hard work, requires pin sharp concentration that you cannot let up. I was lucky in a sense as the bride and groom had already had a ceremony in the states, this was a second ceremony to involve the brides family in Lithuania. So it was quite a short ceremony which didnt help, i was literally sprinting out of the church to catch them coming out...(i had some stern looks from the rector!)and of course the language barrier did not help...but i have some good shots....

The brides sisters son was also christened after the wedding so i had two events to capture...nothing like throwing yourself in at the deep end....

I have 1100 odd images to wade through, so about a weeks work!!!....i can see why wedding photographers earn there money!!

Weather in the Uk is wonderful at the moment and i have seen some truly unique cloud formations this week, which ive not been able to photogaph, but with a few days left before enteries to the competition i have a few shots ear marked. One location was offered to me by an elderly gentleman i met in a poppy field, we got chatting and he offered to let me know about any good locations he found as he travelled all over. I had a message waiting for me on my return form Lithuania saying he'd found a spectacular poppy field......90 miles from his home.....he gets around a bit, its a 180 mile round trip for me, fortunately it was on my way home from the airport and if the plane had not been delayed i would have had a shot of it against one of the best sunsets ive seen this year....ahh well next time....

ok heres some features to finish, best wishes to you all and happy shooting.....not in a raoul moat way!!!

im sorry to put this here as as its not photography related at all and only really applies to the uk, but i feel very strongly about the potential of an idiot running our country for another 4 yrs.

So strongly infact i was motivated to write this blog highlighting some of the reasons why this man and his party no longer deserve to be in power, its a rant so beware. [link]

could someone or numerous people explain to me or give me their thoughts on the glut of clubs that have sprung up on da.

With the obvious fear of sounding like a miserable old git (please dont be afraid to communicate this view) i feel it just complicates what is already complicated enough for someone with a busy life!! and gives me more to do here, whilst im flattered people want an image submitted to their group, it means i have to approve or deny, pass more judgement on other images,etc etc

Is it not enough that my images are in one place ...... consistently amongst all my other images!!!

i'd love to here what people think...

just a quick journal entry,

as those that watch me may know i have become very dissillusioned with the performance of my canon 16-35mm on my 5d mk2 the abberation and softness are terrible and frankly just not good enough, any thing that means i have to spend more time infront of a computer needs to be negated. Obviously it has its uses and i doubt i'll sell it, but im curious to see some results with a prime, i know my 24mm tse produces great images, as does my little 50mm 1.4.....

So i thought i'd have a go with canon's 14mm l mk2,

ive been looking around for a while and once again patience is the key, you can buy this lens in the UK retail for about £1800, ebay does 'buy it nows' from china for about £1400, this morning i thought i'd just have a look again and found a UK lens used about twice for a buy it now of £1250.....needless to say i bit his hand off....

So my eagerly awaited lens arrives on monday.....lets hope i dont end up selling this for the carl zeiss 18mm canon fit!!

The weather is very stormy at the moment so i may go to cornwall for the weekend and see if i can find some big waves, hope you all have a good weekend

LIFE,WEATHER,FEATURES,THE DD D DISTAGONS ARE COMING..

Its been so long since ive written a journal its been a struggle to get round to actually doing one again, but the time has come. I have had a bit of a chaotic life this year and for the first time i have internet connection at home...its a long dull story i wont bore you with...so here we go...

The first thing I would like to mention is the new David Attenborough series' life', [link] I'm sure most UK watchers will be aware of the new series. I watched it opened mouthed the cinematography, sound and camera work will no doubt become award winning, so I'd encourage all those that are able to give it a view.

As far as photography goes September early October has gone some way to make up for the horrendously wet summer we experienced here in the south west. A definite recent pattern is developing throughout the year, we seem to get a warm spell with good sunshine in march/earl April a wetter, colder summer and another period of mild good weather late September early October. Recognizing and interpreting weather is very important to get the most of the landscapes we photograph. I rarely listen to weather forecasts they are too vague and after all if I have the chance to go out I'm going whatever the weather!.  It may be obvious but to be out in it is the best way to see whats going on. Local knowledge is also a much superior method of forecasting weather, farmers and other country people can come up with gems of information that have been handed down from generations regarding localized weather patterns. Once you are out familiarize yourself all the time as to how the weather changes, the wind direction, the way different clouds move their names. Look for weather fronts on the horizons, see how they shift feel them in the air as they approach. The light on the landscape is also obviously of vital importance, there are various web based applications that will allow you to actually see the fall of sunlight on the landscape you intend to shoot, Google earth being the obvious.At your favorite locations get to learn where the sun will be positioned at certain times of the year.  It's all about tuning into your environment, this way you will instinctively know the best locations to visit for the best results. And remember weather conditions can be very localized, gaps in cloud, sudden breaks in the weather can provide some of the most dramatic shots.

Autumn is approaching and we are being hit by some moody storms here, I have visited Exmoor a lot recently as I intend to shoot autumn there as much as possible. I have also become intrigued by a story that has reached national proportions of a huge 16 point stag on Exmoor, he has been dubbed Exmoor emperor [link] 9 ft tall from hoof to antler and 300lb he is said to be the largest wild animal in the UK at present, and he resides very near my mothers farm. So far I've bumped into a very big stag but could not be sure of the points on his antlers (a marker of male and maturity.) So that quest continues I know where he is, our paths may cross…
And so to features, with an emphasis on the above;

Andreas im sure all that read this will know, his latest images are just superb if you dont watch him you should...[link]

just stunningly beautiful colour pallette from andy

and just great to see some images from anders again.

and this makes me very jealous

:thumb138725960:

Out of the blue I had a daily deviation for an older shot seagull lookout

,

so many thanks to patrick [link] who is on a mission to promote as many pieces of art as possible, ahh the energy of youth I remember it well….

Many thanks also to all the new visitors watchers and commenter's…. and the anime herd that flit through :D :D A..MA..ZING!! :eyepopping: :D

As far as hardware goes i have become disillusioned with my canon 16-35mm l lens it just doesn't perform well enough, chromatic aberration is very bad even at f11  and as Andy kindly pointed out its mushy as hell around the edges. So I want the sharpest images possible which leads me to Carl Zeiss. You will know canon fit wide angle distagons are on their way… (I just love that word, sounds like it should be a doctor who character)….so im waiting with anticipation for a distagon, if anyone has any advice/pointers etc on these lenses please do not hesitate to chip in.

And to finish I'll say it's a pleasure to be a part of this community, there really are some good people here, best wishes to you all have a good season!!

....ok ..excuse spelling mistakes (alex)...this is as the title suggests..

as is evident through my lack of activity i have had a busy four months, i have just finished moving my business to a new unit, i have also moved house ....

camera (mark)....some of you are aware that unfortunately due to insurance vouchers i was left with no option but to buy the new canon 5d mk11 unfortunately i have not had the time to take images because of work commitments so i have not got my teeth into it yet but i am impressed with its ability to capture light, especially in low light conditions, used in conjuction with l series lenses especially the canon 16-35l it is almost too sharp, landscapes have great clarity,. to the far distance which is also a improvement....i am also keen to start shooting some movies the hd quality is impressive..but as said i cant comment yet as i dont have enough under my belt.....i have some nice pictures of the dog though!!

gadgets.....well i have been through one i phone already...i christened it the slippery fish and eventually it found a stream on dartmoor....about a week after i'd smashed the screen,,,.....the day before it bounced down steel stairs...:D.....
don't get me wrong here ordinarily i hate mobile phones ....but this is a great phone ... google earth, or any number of maps not to mention ipod, radio, bbci player wherever i can get reception in the palm of my hand easy to use simple ...as you may suspect i love it....

bigger gadgets....this may be pie in the sky so i am dubious about mentioning it here...although i will as it has great relevance to photography...not being able to get out and take photos has been tortuous for me over the past 4 months ...so i have come up with a solution....i am considering buying an A class motorhome...........my reasoning is (other than being homeless at the moment!!)..is that i need to be 'out in the feild' more often.....quite often after work i will drive to a location shoot and then have to drive home,stay in tent or pay for hotel etc,...when ideally i would like to stay for sunrise walk the dog and then cook bacon and egg in the morning sun.....
i have researched motorhomes available and am mostly dissapointed by either manufacturers cramming too much twee chintsy country cottage fittings and decor into them or generally very small with crap layout ...until i found a german company who make an origianl, nicely designed, comfortable motorhome on a good chassis and great engine, and of course it has a rack on the back for a scrambler:D .....in these times of economic madness the idea is even more appealing no council tax no electricity bills no water rates and snotty letters when your late, no gas or gas companies fighting over your business with an inane offer for a 10 year contract, ....no neighbours, less of the rubbish we accumulate during our lives ...and if you dont like where you are.....you can go somewhere else!!!....besides the more i can do to not buy into the madness of the political economical world around me the better...
the other positive of course is being in the field for more to take better landscapes .....so yes im gonna become a hippy...

apologies ....for not replying to all comments ...i will try to catch up ...god bless you all for your support.......how about some originality out there people..:D:D:D

Well about time i bored you all with a journal entry sooooo here we go....

Firstly i have to thank michelle :[link] her continued support and suggesting my image selenium start for a DD

And to everyone who faved it and commented a big thank you it would take me days to reply to everyone so i'll take the easy option.

I mentioned to a few people that getting a DD is like sitting peacefully at home with your feet up watching telly when suddenly the door burst open and a herd of wild animals charge through your front room.....very odd....and stimulating..so again thank you everyone.....apart from alex....:D

So Autumn is upon us and its drving me nuts that i cant get out as often as i'd like to photograph it...the colours are spectacular, i managed to take a trip to exmoor last weekend and will probably do the same this weekend (if i can get my friends 'meet the staff' photos out the way first)...here are a few autumnal shots ive faved recently that you may not have seen....

    :thumb102160553:

and a few with different themes......

    :thumb26557730:

So other than that i really should ban myself from here as i am moving business premises at the moment and have a deadline of christmas to meet. So my output and input may be down...

thats all for now short and sweet ......... and canon hurry up and bring this 5d mk 2 out!!!

I have been tagged yet again this time by the lovely !MsCrys
[link] the most beautiful eyes in canada, but she has a nose like a proboscis monkey thats why she covers it in her id pic. I wouldn't normally bother but as she has asked and promised me she will leave her husband and come and live in the UK with me if i complete it....so i felt obliged :D, So 8 facts :D about myself.

• 1. Post these rules.
• 2. Each tagged person must post 8 things about themselves on their journal.
• 3. At the end, you have to choose and tag 8 people and post their icons on the same journal.
• 4. Go to their pages and send a message saying you tagged them.
• 5. No tag-backs.

1.I have a distinctive 3" scar on my right cheek, i wish i could tell you some amazing story of how i acquired it.....but you guessed it it happened due to my own stupidity......

if any of you remember the old type razors that have the old fashioned razor blades the story is set....i was being lifted out of the bath by my mother aged about 18 months....i had a passion for shutting doors at the time and the bathroom cabinet door was open...i reached out towards the door and my mother thoguht i was going to shut the door but instead i grabbed my fathers 3 piece razor that was loosely screwed together, pulling down my cheek in a very swift action. I managed to soak two towls in blood before getting to the hospital. The cut had almost gone right through my cheek....i can still remember the scar bleeding aged about 3!!.

2. If i could do one thing for the rest of my life snow boarding would be it....

3. I also climb, mountain bike, kayak, play squash walk and generally keep myself quite active.....when not injured!!!

4. I have trained to be a body guard...

5. I buy way too many clothes..........

6. I have a lump of marble from saddam husseins summer palace..

7. i seceretly quite like the smell of my dogs farts....

8. i beleive life is about experiencing as much as possible ...consequently i'll try anything once....and if i don't like something...i'll probably do it again just to make sure i dont like it.....

96....well well im exhausted from bearing my soul inj such a deep psychoanalytical manner... hope you've all learnt something....probably to stay away!

And while we're on the subject i thoguht i'd let all of you know of the true character of a guy on here who comes across as a very amiable decent character.

The person in question is a Mr Andy Mumford, i feel i must warn you this man is not all he seems....he confided in me a few weeks ago that the only reason he married his wife was to gain access to here body parts, and why?....... so he can sell them for camera equipment.... i know uuuunbeleivable, coniving and despicable!!! ....obviously this will come as a shock to a lot of you who know Andy through this site but i think it serves as a warning that you should not take people at face value on the internet..........so if he invites you to lisbon please just be careful .....ohh and i'd suggest we all boycott faving his work as this only encourages him....YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...

so im supposed to tag someone is that right? ok i tag.....

in a reduced capacity...

Although my views have not changed regarding the changes made to this site with version 6 i have decided to keep my gallery here and reduce my overall involvement with the site.

what i have issues with is the amount of time needed, i spent a week away...and had 1000 deviations to view (admittedly my fault for watching too many)and over 1000 messages and favs.

If they had designed this site around dealing with that volume of correspondence more easily then im sure myself along with a lot of others would have been happier. So the only option for me is to view less, fav less, and not thank people for favs or answer every comment made....i will also put up less images....

So i apologise for this in advance......

i was genuinely surprised by the number of people who wanted me to stay here (and subsequently feel like a bit of a drama queen for throwing my toys out the pram)....but judging by what ive read about these changes im not the only one who is unhappy. In fact DA's own survey reflects this, in no way can it be evaluated as a success by the %'s in the poll (20% like it, 16% don't, 30 odd % undecided and will accept it) that to me is a catastrophic failure, but the people in charge here are blind to that....satisfied in there childish way that its better than mudkips GOD GIVE ME STRENGTH!!!

So im still here, unlucky for you lot, i couldn't leave you all alone with Alex anyway, his mental torment is becoming worse and he needs keeping in check...

So thanks to you all for your kind comments, i was genuinely touched (not in that way).....

Been so busy lately ive not had time to dedicate to DA (im sure you all know how that feels!!)

So what have i been up to...well firstly im lucky enogh to have a photographic printing lab right next to my work place so i thought it was about time i got some stuff printed up to a decent size..

Having a good relationship with the guys in there really helped and im chuffed with the way they came out (two have made very welcome birthday presents!) 5 minutes after i dropped them off the guy from the lab came back to my shop with a guy that works for the council here in Devon, he looks after the 65 libraries in Devon and walked into the printers asking if they knew any Devon  landscpae photographers, fortunately my panoramics were on his table.

So i have had my first commision for prints the first being [link] and the second a panoramic from high on dartmoor looking across farmland which i have not submitted here. He wanted five foot long images and even though i say so myself at this size they look awesome, they will be shown in libraries around devon and it may lead to more. So needless to say i am very happy at that......

i have been busy with work at the moment so not been out shooting a lot, to be fair the light has been a little flat here recently i missed the bluebell rush(but to be honest as i saw som many other shots of bluebells here i didn't want to add to the already excellent images posted by the likes of;

who have had it covered, that said spring this year has brought an abundance of wild flowers (more than i can remember for many years. I am told it is due to the slow cut back in pesticide use and of course the longer warmer seasons we are having due to global warming).....so im hoping to get some good landscapes with wild flowers.

God this is a boring journal......i may post the image of me and some good friends dressed as eccentric english gentleman for a friends stag do in london town which reminds me if anyone has any good techniques or tutorials for ageing photos (ie sepia dust and scratches etc) i would be most grateful :D

So onto feature....im not sure if any of you are aware of this guys stuff but i love the humorous insight into another part of the world he gives (not to mention his excellent images) he also has a truly unique way of editing his images he is fred wijaya [link]

i love this portrait of a 92 year old in the tea plantation;

so enjoy his work

well as some of you know i have had to buy a new camera (i know what a shame)...ive bought a canon 5d and i have to say it really does feel like a quality bit of kit...strangely enough the thing that impresses me most is the beautifully smooth shutter. of course it also means a step up in lenses and ive bought a canon 16-24mm l series lens to go with it and again the quality is exceptional.

Ive also had to buy a new laptop and with it cs3 which has made me mad ive not had both before, The laptop is enabling me to edit images much quicker than my previous machine and cs3's RAW processing is a marked step up from cs2.

So all this is good but also depressing...i feel like i want to go back and re-edit everything!!! where does it all end!!! ....of course it doesnt is the answer....

Now as many of you know its very easy to get sucked into the constant upgrade thing and of course quality items produce quality results but just to keep our feet on the ground im gonna feature a young lady who has just started to watch me whose images are taken with a mobile phone.

I hope by doing this it'll serve as a reminder to us all that the kit does not make a photographer and that we should count ourselves lucky we are able to buy such stuff...

As said Justyna [link] takes her images in her gallery on a mobile phone!!!.... but nonetheless they show her talent to spot great composition good colours and moods....so all you photography snobs (me included) or individuals that are obsessed with what camera took what shot ....have a look...

And lastly its my birthday at the weekend and im off to Ljubljana in Slovenia so if anyone has been before and has any good advice i'd be most grateful...

Best wishes to you all...
