remains of the day by sassaputzin remains of the day by sassaputzin
The remains of the day after i'd paddled my arms off....!!

last weekend i decided it was about time i went for a dawn paddle so set off to the coast around the salcombe area
of the south devon coastline...

I camped near the estuary and set my alarm for 5.30am. As is always the case when i muster the energy to get up that early i could tell conditions would not be great for photography...

So i paddled out into the darkness with the glow of the sun inland behind me. I paddled to prawle point and rounded it with the beautiful morning sun on my face.....(this is starting to sound like a novel!!)....As said there was no real cloud and tbh i was at the wrong part of the coast for a sunrise...

So paddling back into salcombe on a barmy indian summer morning coming into the harbour the smell of cooked breakfast filled my yearning nostrils...time to re charge...

After brekkie and some sunbathing i went out of the harbour to the right to catch the evening light, back towards hope cove and thurlestone where many of my recent images are from...

This part of the coastline is spectacular, huge great cliffs multi coloured with moss and lichen fall into the sea, unfortunately there was nowhere for me to beach and get out, so no photos again (i will however return with a small anchor for my kayak and get a shot of this part of the coastline..)

Next was a massive sea cave approx 20 ft from sea to the top, i paddled in backwards and got in about 20 ft before this unearthly 'howl' started from very deep within the cave, at this stage knowing that obviously it was the wind, i decided it was probably not a good idea to go much further in so i took two paddle strokes out of the cave and the howl stopped....eerie to say the least, and a very very deep cave..

So with nowhere to put in i rounded the corner at hope cove with the sun about to set my only option was to beach at the beach this shot was taken at [link]

i fell out of my canoe and set about taking images, i was intending to pack up but the sky started filling with crimson bands which reflected ontot he incoming tide so another opportunity presented itself..

This is the last shot of the day 120m secs with a lee 3 stop glass filter, (which i might add i dropped for the first time on jagged rocks, to my surprise not a scratch on it) :w00t:

So after paddling about 30km in all to try and get a new shot i end up back where i started ....however it was worth the recce i now know this part of coastline a lot better and have some unique compositions to return for....

all comments welcomed,

p.s andy... i know you wont even open this up as its another coastal shot but there you go your not the only one who can write a novel alongside each submission...beat that ;)

I was a bit confused and felt a bit lost lately. Too little time - too many problems. Wasn't easy to catch the good vein lately etc. I'll do my best in the upcoming days - promise!

What a great tale, goes well with the shot. I'm jealous. I live on the coast and I'm planning to get a kayak at Christmas, hopefully gonna put it to the same good use as you have done here. Thanks for the shot of inspiration :D

Very nice. Incredible color; I love the textures of all of the jagged rocks just barely visible through the frothed water. Awesome.

Nup, not even going to open it :-)

Steve, you should know that that particular comment doesn't apply to a handful of people here, yourself included, who's work I will ALWAYS look at.
This last weekend I found myself with my tripod in the water shooting rock-sea-sky shots...so I've kind of shot myself in the foot really, I can't submit them now without looking even more like a knob than usual...

Anyways, I really like this...I've always had a soft spots for rocks that have that tramline thing going on, like the ones in the foreground, and the sky is really cool here.
This is cropped, right? Wondering where and why you cropped. There's a little bit of pink light on the rocks right at the bottom, that I'd like to see more of.

Oh, and I've been cutting down my descriptions recently, I think I've been pretty succinct (by my own rather rambling standards, this comment being a case in point).

Lovely shot :D

Very very cool indeed. Any chance and recovering some of the darks? Just a tad of detail would do well I feel. Great effort to get there :-)
